Using Location Studio Lighting for Portraits
Using location studio lighting is an easy way to produce professional results. Â Most of the time I will go to a new clients location and scout their offices if they are requesting an environmental portrait. Â I prefer to work without surprises. If the client wants to be outside, and there is onsite security, they must be informed and permission must be granted before the shoot. Again if we are going to be outside I like to have a idea of where the sun will be. (Yes, there is an App. for that.) Most of the time photographing outside also requires the use of lights. We need to plan for the weather, even in Southern California.
The client told me over the phone the we would be photographing inside and “the offices are beautiful”. So I caught a dose of the lazies went with out a scout. The offices were….nice. Some brightly colored walls with a few photographs representing the clients industry. Mostly there were a lot of cubicles. The client however is very attractive lady. Time to get creative.
Bringing location studio lighting is a must for portraits.
Location studio lighting can do more then just make your subject visible in the photograph. The creative use of even small well placed strobes can not only define the subject they can exclude what is not wanted in your photograph. Don’t own all the equipment you need? Consider renting from a camera store.
Location studio lighting does not have to be large and expensive. Just the opposite is true. When traveling to a location you want to bring enough for the job but way too much is just dumb. Especially if you are just photographing one person. The examples on this page were done with a couple of battery operated strobes with umbrellas and scrims.
Shooting digital images makes photography much easier then it was a dozen years ago. Getting creative and the use of a few off camera lights makes you a better photographer.
